Jamie Nakatani, DVM, MPVM, presents "Exploring New Methods of Assessing Welfare in Captive Bottlenose Dolphins".
Dr. Jamie Nakatani is a veterinarian who is currently pursuing a PhD with the Animal Behavior Graduate Group at UC Davis and working on her residency with the American College of Animal Welfare. As a former zookeeper and graduate of the Exotic Animal Training and Management Program at Moorpark College, she is primarily interested in the impact of positive reinforcement training on animal welfare in zoological settings. Her current research involves captive bottlenose dolphins, developing ways to assess their welfare, and studying the connection between positive reinforcement training, welfare, and health parameters in that species.
Jennifer Link, University of California, Davis, presents "Domestic cat (felis catus) socialization across contexts: Conspecifics, humans, and owner opinions".
Jen Link is a 4th year PhD candidate in the Animal Behavior Graduate Group. Prior to her PhD she received her MS in Psychological Science, where she focuses her research on the human side of the human-animal relationship. Now, she aims to study the animal side of that relationship. She is a member of Carly Moody’s Animal Welfare Epidemiology Lab where she primarily studies shelter cat behavior and welfare. In particular, she is interested in domestic cat social behavior both with conspecifics and humans, and how that may inform sheltering practices.
Host: Dr. Carly Moody (cmoody@ucdavis.edu)
