Get paid to conduct research

The Learning-Aligned Employment Program, or LAEP, supports students with financial need by providing eligible underrepresented and low-income students the opportunity to earn money to defray their educational costs while they gain education-aligned, career-related employment.

Designed as an alternative to traditional work-study jobs, LAEP connects students with research positions that advance their major or career interests. Much like work-study programs, LAEP students are placed in educationally beneficial positions related to their areas of study or career objectives and aid in the exploration of career objectives.

The program includes and emphasizes student positions with employers capable of providing them with full-time employment opportunities after graduation or connections with other employers capable of providing full-time employment opportunities in their study areas after graduation.

Applications open for the UC Davis Health Professions Post-Bac Program!

UC Davis Post Bac Health Program

The UC Davis Health Professions Post-Bac Program will begin accepting applications on April 1st for our January 2025 cohort! Our Round 1 deadline is April 30th followed by our Round 2 deadline on May 31st. Higher priority and consideration will be given to applicants who apply before the above deadlines. The final application due date is July 15th on PostBacCAS.

Our unique 12-month academic enhancing post-bac program is designed for those pursuing any health profession. Students will take roughly 45 units of upper-division science coursework taught by UC Davis faculty from January 2025 - December 2025. Students will have access to wraparound advising and test prep services upon completion of the program. An academic plan will be created with an advisor based on previous coursework completed, needed coursework and student interests.

Test preparation, including books for the MCAT, GRE, DAT, TEAS, or OAT is built into our program at no additional cost. Our students are also provided with support seminars and comprehensive application preparation to help them showcase the value they bring to the healthcare field.

Students will select one of three tracks: Clinical, Research or Health Equity/One Health. During the summer quarter, students will become EMT-trained, join a research lab or participate in a hands-on public health learning opportunity.

2024 Internship at Nkonzo Wildlife (Hartenbos, South Africa)

We are seeking interns for 2-16 weeks to assist in our conservation and research efforts.

This opportunity is available on the Handshake platform (Job #8335530).

Intern duties include data collection on our observational behavior studies (see below), monitoring camera traps, consolidating reports, beach clean-ups, and other miscellaneous duties. The position is supplemented with field training basics in wildlife track and sign, bush survival skills, and ethical wildlife approach methods.

In 2024 we are focusing on:

  • Ecology of white rhinoceros in Fynbos (conducted through non-invasive, observational research) focuses on spatial patterns, social behavior, and condition monitoring for management purposes in closed systems.
  • Population ecology of novel brown hyaena (Parahyaena brunnea) occurrence in Fynbos stemming from the recent discovery of brown hyaena presence in an extirpated area of their historical range (Hall, A. and Thatcher, H., 2021. A confirmed sighting of brown hyaena, Parahyaena brunnea (Thunburg, 1820) in an extirpated area of the Western Cape, South Africa. African Journal of Ecology59(4), pp.1047-1050). This work is conducted through systematic trail camera deployment.
  • Bovid stress and vigilance behavior on small game reserves and the correlation with tourism activities.
  • Land use and biodiversity to measure the variation in meso-herbivores under different land management practices.

We also acknowledge that the internship requires a fee that covers the student's accommodation, conservation fees set by the reserves, select meals, and includes a donation to local anti-poaching units.
