Joyce Fernandez has been an academic adviser for the BASC since its inception in 2013. Formerly an advisor for Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior for two years, as of 2016, Joyce meets with students in Evolution, Ecology and Biodiversity, Plant Biology and Undeclared – Life Sciences. Joyce received her master's degree in Career Counseling with an emphasis in Higher Education from Chapman University, and her bachelor's degree in Ethnic Studies from California State University, Sacramento.

Not only does Joyce work as an academic adviser in the BASC, she is also an adjunct counselor and instructor at American River College in Sacramento, where she has worked since 2010.

One of Joyce's favorite quotes is by poet Ralph Waldo Emerson and reads, "The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well."
